going green

A very topical subject and We Do Care… very much! We do our best as a small company to offset our predicted 10 tonnes of CO2 emissions produced from our three 1970's classic VW campers with 2L air-cooled petrol engines, a 1989 VW T25 camper with a 1.9L water-cooled engine, plus the general running of our business.

Take a closer look at the data that shows the average age of a car in the UK is 7.7 years, while a typical camper or motorhome will last 20 years or more. So surely this makes the camper worse? More miles, more pollution?

Well no, when it comes to car emissions it’s not all about mpg and CO2 emissions.
The process of building a car or camper also produces emissions, and in many cases more emissions than the vehicle will produce in a lifetime of driving. If the car is then scrapped after 8 years, the cycle starts all over again.

Our oldest campers will be 50 years old in 2025, so this has contributed to significantly reducing the embodied energy cost per year. So, old classic cars are not too bad for the environment after all!

As a small business, we have chosen to offset our calculation of 10 tonnes of CO2e (Carbon dioxide equivalent) by supporting Tree Planting in the UK.

Retro Campers Norfolk has teamed up with Carbon Footprint Ltd. to offset our carbon emissions. We’ve chosen to do this because we believe it’s our responsibility to make a positive change to the future of our planet. There are many contributing factors to global warming, but the one most relevant to us is vehicle emissions.

Our funding of the Carbon Footprint scheme supports the planting of trees in the East Anglian region. The project mainly plants in school locations, helping to educate children and support wildlife habitats, whilst sequestering carbon emissions.

In addition, our whole farming business has been independently verified against the robust LEAF Marque Standard.

LEAF Marque is a leading global assurance system recognising more sustainably farmed products. Modern technology and traditional methods are used with the goal of delivering a prosperous farm business that enriches the environment and engages local communities.

We have been planting a new 1ha wood of mixed native trees, along with 1.5km of new native hedging. Some of this is 'Windsor' hedge - a wide double hedge is planted with trees down the middle, a style favoured by HM King Charles on his Windsor Estate.

Our farm is also part of the Government's ongoing farm environmental scheme, which aims to reduce carbon loss from soils, as well as improving diversity of flora and fauna.

Now, we would not be investing in the planting of trees, if all we are doing is using products that are largely made from virgin pulp from trees.

We’re amazed that most toilet paper is still made with virgin trees. Not only are we cutting them down, wiping our bums and flushing them down the toilet, we’re consuming loads of energy and water along the way. Trees should be for hugging, not wiping!
So, to be truly green, we are using Who Gives a Crap toilet paper, who make all of their products with environmentally friendly materials, and then donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets for those in need.

We are now providing one roll of Who Gives a Crap Premium Bamboo Toilet Paper in each camper. Enjoy, it’s the softest 3-ply loo roll ever, it’s made with 100% forest friendly bamboo with no inks, dyes or scents.
