going green

A very topical subject and we Do care… very much! We do out best as a small company to offset our predicted 10 tonnes of CO2 emissions produced from our three 1970's classic VW campervans with air-cooled petrol engines, one 1980's VW campervan with a water-cooled petrol engine, a modern VW T6 campervan with a EURO 6 Diesel engine, a small 1.2 L petrol VW Beetle and the running of our business from our rental unit.

Take a closer look at the data that shows the average age of a car in the UK is 7.7 years, while a typical camper or motorhome will last 20 years or more. So surely this makes the camper worse? More miles, more pollution?

Well no, when it comes to car emissions it’s not all about mpg and CO2 emissions.
The process of building a car or camper also produces emissions, and in many cases more emissions than the vehicle will produce in a lifetime of driving. If the car is then scrapped after 8 years, the cycle starts all over again.

Our oldest campervans will be 50 years old in 2025, so this has contributed to significantly reducing the embodied energy cost per year. So, old classic cars are not too bad for the environment after all!

As a small business, we have chosen to offset our calculation of 10 tonnes of CO2e (Carbon dioxide equivalent) in favour of UK Tree Planting in East Anglia.

Retro Campers Norfolk has teamed up with Carbon Footprint Ltd. to offset our carbon emissions. We’ve chosen to do this because we believe it’s our responsibility to make a positive change to the future of our planet. There are many contributing factors to global warming, but the one most relevant to us is vehicle emissions.
Our funding supports the planting of trees in the East Anglian region. The project mainly plants in school locations, helping to educate children and support wildlife habitats, whilst sequestering carbon emissions.
For each tCO2e offset, one tree is planted and an additional tCO2e is offset through a VCS Tree Buddying project to guarantee the emission reductions.

Trees are essential to maintaining our climate and biodiversity. Trees contribute to the global environment by improving air quality, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take out carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce the oxygen we breathe.

Trees are the largest plants on the planet and the longest living species on earth, providing a link between the past, present and future. Some Oak trees for instance can live for over 1000 years, so a woodland planted today could easily outlive all of us and provide a long term carbon store.

Now, we would not be investing in the planting of trees, if all we are doing is using products that are largely made from virgin pulp from trees.

We’re amazed that most toilet paper is still made with virgin trees. Not only are we cutting them down, wiping our bums and flushing them down the toilet, we’re consuming loads of energy and water along the way. Trees should be for hugging, not wiping!
So, to be truly green, we are using Who Gives a Crap toilet paper, who make all of their products with environmentally friendly materials, and then donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets for those in need.

We are now providing one roll of Who Gives a Crap Premium Bamboo Toilet Paper in each camper. Enjoy, it’s the softest 3-ply loo roll ever, it’s made with 100% forest friendly bamboo with no inks, dyes or scents.
